Hi Stephanie , I do not think we should or will withdraw aid to Egypt at this time.
The US has funded the Egyptian military machine for decades and have continued to do so even while Morsi was president. Its just my opinion but I dont believe the Egyptian military would have removed Morsi at this time unless US officials signed off on it. In spite of the neutral comments coming out of the White House , I believe in reality they gave the Egpyt military the green light to go forward with this. The Egyptian military remain very loyal to its Washington funder and Im convinced the US signed off on it. And I think they were correct to do this as Morsi was definitely no friend to the US.
Does the coup constitute removal of funding? You may hear a few suggest it but most of the Washington machine in both parties will not consider it for even a minute. Dont forget Morsi himself suspended the constitution for a period and has thrown the Egyptian constitution under the bus many times throughout his leadership and you will hear US politicians on both sides point this out as reason for continued funding and how Morsi was no better then those who removed him and that we must wait and see what develops. They will point out how this is a fledgling democracy and with it in its early phases comes many growing pains. They will point to the justice who was appointed interim President as a step in the right direction and that we must allow Egypt time to hold more elections and give them a chance to elect someone who will actually adhere to the constitution.
Bottomline for me is that I am happy Morsi is out and I believe the US signed off on it and I support them if they did. I dont believe any religious named group such as the Muslim Brotherhood should rule any country. I think it is a disaster elsewhere as well like in Iran where the Ayatollah's reign supreme. If a group with a name like the "Catholic Brotherhood" formed a political party , gained seats and came to power in the US , I think that would be very bad thing and I think its just as bad for countries anywhere else.
