You mean a campaigning politician made remarks that were political?! What a shock! What a startling thing to do!
And if the Republicans hadn't made an issue of it, not very many people would have heard about it. So who exactly is "playing politics" here? And whose action might "lend support" to Iraqi resistors (if indeed it does that, which I and anyone who believes that US forces are so much more powerful than the Iraqi forces must strongly doubt): the one who made a speech to a few people at a campaign/probably fundraising event, or the ones who widely publicized the speech?
