Imagine if Australia were to lock up Mel Gibson's father, one of the major proponents of denying there was a holocaust.
Free he is viewed just as that harmless kook, but in prison, he becomes the persecuted, and that draws sympathy and wonderment of why are they are doing this, which then leads to conspiracy theory and so on.
Regards Mel Gibson and his father, when anyone dare ask him about his father's writings, he gives an angry "we are not going there".
I saw an interview where he did that angry eyed flash and said "we are NOT going there" and the interviwer blanched.
