Well, I'd disagree on the obsolescence argument.
But I did have to recommend a Celeron M Notebook today to someone
at work that asked. He provided the parameters of what he wanted
to do so I basically agreed with the proposed model.
It was a low-end gift for a young relative. This guy has one
or two recent Apple systems so he isn't averse to trying out
recommendations from the rest of us that have Apples and other
hardware. But his favored vendor is Dell and I didn't see any
reason to try to push him to HP and AMD. He knows that I'm an
AMD fan but that I also work pretty hard to provide an objective
answer for a given set of parameters.
BTW, some of the guys at Mozilla are finally starting to work
on getting it to work on AMD64 Windows. What's strange to me is
that there are already proposed code changes to make it work
right now and that those have been under review for probably a
year. But now that 1.5 is out, maybe there are spare cycles
available to look at Windows 64.
Some of the stuff that they're talking about is interesting
as the current working stuff works mostly with 32-bit longs.
There are other ports that work with 64-bit longs so pieces
of them could be used to port over. I personally think that
they should just use the proposed code that more or less
works and then work on the other stuff later on.
It would be nice if this could be done for Mac/OSX as well
as G5's support 64-bit arithmetic mode. But there's probably
a smaller audience for that compared to Windows 64.
