What the NRA has done is make it very easy for straw purchases to go unpunished as it makes it very easy for all those handguns sold in the yahoo states to be brought into urban areas to help gangs protect their turf. As a society we are pretty ignorant of what are the real drivers of violence - drugs and alcohol being the primary drivers. Legalize drugs and we eliminate much of the violence directed at the young offenders and we save a ton of money. Therein lies the problem - conservatives are afraid of their own shadow and want tough criminal laws and will never agree to not putting enough minorities in prison.
