Russia is Europe's top natural gas supplier

MOSCOW, December 5 (RIA Novosti) - Russia is the top supplier of natural gas to Europe, accounting for 30% of the European Union's gas imports, and the second major exporter of oil and oil derivatives with 20% of EU oil imports, a Russian Foreign Ministry official said Monday.

Mikhail Kamynin, the official ministry spokesman, said fuel and energy goods accounted for 59.4% of Russian exports.

Kamynin also said Russia was the third largest exporter to EU nations after the United States and China, and the fourth European importer after the U.S., Switzerland, and China.

"The EU accounts for more than 50% of Russia's foreign trade and about 70% of foreign capital accrued in the Russian economy," Kamynin said.

Imports from the EU are dominated by readymade industrial and consumer goods, including equipment (35.5%), vehicles (11%), chemical goods (13.8%), and agricultural products (9.9%).

Ferrous and non-ferrous metals make up 11.4% of Russian exports, precious metals and stones 2.7%, and wood 2.2%.
