While I suspect old devices will be of some importance to their target audience, it's really the pricing that will catch people's eyes.

Plus think about this nugget: With all the major wireless carriers scrambling over spectrum (all need more spectrum), VOIP technology via mobile phones or devices would relieve a lot of network usage and help ease some of the network usage/demand for additional spectrum plus offer consumers a lower price.

Almost seems like a win-win on paper.
