Thanks for the explanation Wizetradr. That helps a lot. It would be nice to be able to screen for stocks that are close to a record distance (for that particular stock) from their 5 day moving average. Then one could possibly use that as a filtering mechanism for stocks that may be ready to make a small recovery.
Out of curiosity, what made you use the 5 day moving average. Also, is it a SMA (smoothed moving average) or an EMA (exponential moving average)? By the looks of the chart, I'd almost have to guess that it's a SMA, but I could be wrong.
