You don't see a trend away from expensive, proprietary IP towards inexpensive IP that's amenable to customization and more ownership/control over the supply chain?

You don't see how self-contradictory that statement is?

Look at the ends you just mentioned. "More ownership/control over the supply chain." That by itself leads to a sort of "expensive, proprietary IP" that you say the industry is supposedly moving away from. Only this time, the "proprietary IP" in question is the mobile platform that is being developed by each company, e.g. iOS for Apple.

So no, we're not seeing the trend that you mentioned above. Instead, we're seeing the pillars of "expensive, proprietary IP" being shifted toward Apple, Google, and Samsung. Microsoft is trying to build its own pillar, while Intel is trying to become a major supplier for all of these pillars.

But hey, if I'm wrong, maybe you can point out an example of some small competitor rising up by "rolling their own inexpensive IP" and ready to take on Apple, Google, and Samsung.
