Capstone installs LNG MicroTurbines on inland barge
Capstone Turbine Corp has installed two C30 LNG MicroTurbines to provide onboard power to the MTS Argonon, a dual fuel Type-C Tanker commissioned by Dean Shipping. The Capstone microturbines have an output of 30kW each and fulfil all onboard electricity needs for the ship.
The ship is powered by a Caterpillar 3512DF engine of Pon Power, running on a mixture of 80 percent natural gas and 20 percent diesel, making it the first inland barge in Europe to sail on dual fuel sources.
The use of the two C30 LNG microturbines results in a reduction of about 25 000 litres of diesel per year, totalling cost savings of roughly €15,000, according to Capstone Turbine.
The system operates in an N+1 setting, whereby exhaust from the microturbines is captured in a heat exchanger to heat onboard water which is then diverted to heat the LNG vaporizer, providing fuel to the microturbines as well as to make the LNG gaseous for the ship's main propulsion engines.
In addition, the hot water produces heat for the onboard boiler, hot water system and central heating. It is also fed into an absorption chiller for the air conditioning system. This helps reduce emissions and costs arising from the ships auxiliary systems.
The C30 LNG MicroTurbines are also able to meet strict emission regulations without additional exhaust after treatment resulting in a significant reduction in service requirements, maintenance and operational costs. Compared to traditional diesel power generators, the Argonon's turbines have extremely low NOx emissions and produce a negligible amount of particulate matter.
