I know we differ when it comes to the Catholic religion but I will say a couple of things.
1. There are good popes and bad popes. I don't think history will judge this one as one of the good ones.
2. Apparently humility is not one of Benedict's strong suits.
As pope emeritus, Benedict intends to reside in Castel Gandolfo for several months and then return to the Vatican to live in an apartment in a convent whose gardens offer a perfect view of the dome of St. Peter’s Basilica.
I've known lots of priests in my time and when they retire they usually go live in a monastery somewhere. I mean really pope emeritus? Give me a frigging break. What part of quit am I missing.
Definition of EMERITUS : one retired from professional life but permitted to retain as an honorary title the rank of the last office held
Last I looked the Catholic Church still frowned on vanity.
3. He still has a bunch of Cardinals that should have been fired for their coverups of the sex abuse scandals. Denial is not a river in Epypt.
4. He claims to have supported Vatican II.
Vatican experts said the pope was devastated when the leader of the ultra-traditionalist Society of St. Pius X, whose excommunication he had revoked to global outrage, refused to acknowledge the teachings of Vatican II, a condition of bringing the group back into full communion.
Then he decided to revert to the literal translation of the Mass from Latin to English. I'm not impressed.
Hopefully the Church will finally wake the hell up and the next pope will come from somewhere outside of Europe. I don't put too much stock in that but I can always hope. I probably have better luck hitting the lottery. lol.
