no i do not think its surprising at all. if you take the percentage difference of those peak highs and troughs and compare the percentage difference in the nas between 1970 and spring 2000, the differences in the peaks and troughs are about tiny compared to the overall move in the markets.

do the same comparison with a flat to down stock market and see what happens, i would like to see it
