A metaphor to think about:

Traders, this is like a title fight in boxing. Two guys are duking it out, when suddenly one sustains a nasty cut, in this case the shorters. At the end of the round the ring physician looks at the gash and shakes his head.

The fighter knows the attending physician is recommending that the fight be stopped, but the boxer pleads for one more round. The doctor shakes his head again in doubt, but reluctantly gives the okay. So, what does the bleeder do? He pulls out the stops, charges forth in the following round and desparately goes for the knockout, because he knows he's about to lose the fight on a TKO if he doesn't.

That's what the shorters are doing, folks. Pulling out the stops, because they know they've been hurt badly, and their ploy is going to be short lived. I've seen this kind of thing too many times. Either the bleeder finally throws in the towel, or he goes blind.
