Thomas More: Saint or Sinner?
Posted: 26-Jul-2011 at 11:09
Sir Thomas More was a close friend of Henry VIII who was beheaded for refusing to recognise Henry as head of the church. More was widely respected as a humanist scholar who theorised a model society called Utopia, and an early advocate of free speech. In addition to his learning he had a reputation for honesty and strove to lead by example, wearing plain clothes, engaging in flagellation and drinking only water (highly unusual at a time when beer was the normal drink).
However, there is a darker side to More which was eclipsed by his martyrdom: as a young man he was a fornicator and adulterer and as Lord Chancellor he was a cruel persecutor of Protestants. He was adept at using humor and mockery, even at his execution when he disrespectfully offered the headsman his cap rather than his gown, and was remembered by Hall as a foolish wiseman.
