USGT ~ A number of major mining companies, such as Newmont Mining and Barrick Gold Corporation, operate mines in the state. Mining in Nevada is a major industry, and one of the largest sources of precious metals in the world. Barrick’s Goldstrike mine is one of the world’s biggest and in 2007 alone, produced 1,250,000 ounces of gold. Nevada mined 79% of all the gold in the United States, which is equivalent to 5,640,000 troy ounces (175 t) in 2009.
