HANNOVER, Germany--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 11, 2003--Lucent Technologies (NYSE:LU - News)
Lucent Conducts Live Demonstrations with T-Mobile,
and Partners HSB Systemhaus and HOB, Showing How
Business Customers Can Benefit from UMTS
At CeBIT 2003, Lucent Technologies (NYSE:LU - News) will demonstrate how business customers can access company applications, retrieve software updates from the Intranet and Internet or use super-fast data services while on the move using 3G UMTS technology.
Lucent is using these live demonstrations to emphasise its "data-first" UMTS strategy, geared towards the demands of business customers.
"As we enter the third generation of mobile communications, we see professional users as the first and most significant customers who will provide increased service provider revenue opportunities," said David Poticny, president of Lucent Technologies' Mobility Solutions Group in Europe.
Live UMTS demo at the T- Mobile stand
Lucent and the largest mobile telephony provider in Germany, T-Mobile, will demonstrate high-speed, secure data services for business customers at the T-Mobile stand (Hall 26, Stand A01, Corporate area). In a live presentation, the companies will demonstrate how a business customer, using a laptop computer equipped with a 3GlobeTrotter UMTS wireless PC modem card -- jointly developed by Lucent and Option -- can access T-Mobile's mobile portals.
With the Mobile Access Portals, employees can quickly and easily access their company intranet, whereas with the Mobile Service Portal, they can access important office applications such as e-mail and calendar functions while on the move. These portals can be accessed now using GPRS terminals, however, UMTS provides considerably higher data rates. As a result, company videos, photos, documents, company-wide applications or presentations can be conveniently retrieved and processed up to nine times faster than is possible on the GPRS network.
"This live high-speed demonstration at CeBIT demonstrates the progress we are making in our UMTS initiative with T-Mobile," said Dr. Werner Irler, Global Accounts director for T-Mobile at Lucent Technologies. "We want to make it easier for business customers to work while on the move, making the 'mobile office' even more productive."
Lucent is currently deploying a UMTS test network in Nuremberg in order to test secure, extremely high-speed data services with T-Mobile's business customers.
Joint presentation at the Lucent stand
Along with other demonstration participants, Lucent will be presenting its solutions to support the mobile office of the future at its own stand (A16, hall 27).
HSB Systemhaus will demonstrate how quickly applications, operating systems and software updates can be distributed via UMTS using the software ON Command. This solution manages programs on desktops, servers, mobile PCs and handhelds. ON Command helps reduce support costs and optimises system management," said Rudolf Limmer, managing director at HSB Systemhaus. "With UMTS, this capability can be taken advantage of remotely. This opens up new possibilities for companies to ensure that their field staff has access to the latest technology and information to help them do their jobs more effectively."
Another demonstration, conducted in conjunction with HOB GmbH & Co. KG, illustrates how users can access applications on their company network. HOB has developed two pre-integrated client-server solutions that enable corporate customers to use their PCs to access 3G services via the Lucent's UMTS network infrastructure.
One application, HOBLink JWT, is a platform-independent connectivity solution for the Windows terminal server. It is Java-based and thus enables all installation and administrative tasks to be carried out centrally. As a result, when using the UMTS network, the user can access Windows applications without having to perform any specialised installation procedures.
Another application, the web-to-host software HOBLink J-Term, can emulate various mainframe terminals in a user-friendly way and also access a Windows Terminal Server. This enables the end-user to quickly and easily access corporate data and applications, regardless of what specific client platform they are using.
"This is a decisive step towards the integration of mobile users into internal business processes", said HOB's founder and chairman, Klaus Brandstatter.
All of Lucent's live 3G UMTS demos at the CeBIT exhibition are based on Lucent's end-to-end UMTS network, which will be deployed on the exhibition grounds. This solution will include two base stations (Node Bs) from the Flexent® OneBTS(TM) product line.
Lucent is exhibiting its industry leading solutions and services in Hall 27 / Stand A16 at CeBIT 2003 in Hannover, Germany from 11-19 March, 2003.
