Dead birds to be tested for bird flu in Germany
By ASSOCIATED PRESS

Veterinarians will examine on Tuesday about 25 wild fowl found dead at a lake in western Germany, police said, as EU officials prepared for an outbreak of bird flu.

The 25 geese and ducks were found on Monday afternoon at a lake used by migratory birds near Neuwied in Rhineland-Palatinate state, Neuwied police said in a statement.

German police said the wild birds found dead there "appear to be migrants of unknown origin" and that some were convulsed by "strong cramps" before they died as firefighters helped recover them from the water.

Swans and other waterfowl also seen at the lake showed no sign of illness, it said.

The water in the lake was also to be tested.
