iRobot lands $140M Navy contract upgrade
September 26, 2005
Boston Business Journal

Military and commercial robot maker iRobot Corp. won a $140 million contract upgrade to provide parts and service for the Man Transportable Robotic System the company is building for the U.S. Navy.

According to a press release from the U.S. Department of Defense, the military has an "urgent and compelling need" for the systems, which are used by troops in Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom.

iRobot of Burlington is scheduled to finish the military work for the Naval Sea Systems Command's Indian Head Division in Indian Head, Md., by October 2012.

Earlier this month, iRobot announced that its $12.1 million order for 103 man-transportable robots, known as PackBot, could grow to a deal to make 1,200 robots through 2012.

The company has filed to stage a $115 million initial public offering.
