The Steinbeck quote is the reason why the socialists are working hard to destroy social mobility and make social status heritable via all sorts of government subsidies, licensing schemes and perfunctory "education" that focuses on "degrees" (i.e. ranking) instead of focusing on marketable skills.
What the socialists don't realize is that, once their social status is due to government enforced monopoly instead of marketable skills, they themselves are highly vulnerable to displacement/disposal at the whim of higher ranking monopolists and the mob.
