Paul Krugman has been on a tear about "class warfare" for years and recently, his 12/29 NY Times piece "Class Wars of 2012" describes his position here. He (Krugman) is hardly some "outside force", as you suggest.
By the way, his position is an attempt to resurect the middle class that has been losing out (to the plutocrats) for 30 years.
