Samsung's Game-Changer

The word has been trickling out for a week or three that, next year, Samsung is going to come out with one of these Holy Grail, game-changer jobbies - a flexible display.

Of course it's not known if this is fully roll-able or fold-able display or if it just flexes a little.

If it's roll-able or fold-able then it is truly a game-changer because it means you can carry in your pocket everything you need for basic computing.

If you press a button on your phone and out comes a ten inch screen, then what's the point of carrying a laptop, or even a tablet around?

It will also make pocket TV-watching attractive to the mass market - something which has eluded manufacturers for 30 years.

The fold-able, roll-able display has been pursued for over a decade because of this potential importance.

Five or six years ago the CEO of Cambridge Display Technologies told me the only thing preventing CDT from having one was the lack of a barrier layer to keep the water in the atmosphere from degrading the display..

Now, it is being said that Samsung is sampling phones with bendable displays and will be in mass-production next year.

If they really are roll-able or fold-able this is terrible news for Apple. Samsung already out-sells them 2-1 in smartphones.

And it's bad news for the horizontal business model pioneered by the PC industry where OEMs buy in all the key components, while signalling a resurgence of the vertically integrated company which made all the key components in a product themselves.
