Basically, the idea is that the mutual funds are unloading because they are required to by their own rules. AAPL is in many mutual funds either because they designed to track the S&P 500, or because AAPL is such a great growth story, or perhaps even a great value stock based on its PE ratio. However, the stock has had a great year, and therefore it exceeds the limit for a percentage of any single stock that a fund can own. Therefore, the fund, by its own rules, must unload some of its position in the stock before year end.
