The Gen is a prime candidate or was for 2016 for the Republicans. They were hoping he would run in 2012. So I can see why he kept it quiet. However I can't see why he called at all unless he thought he could get a scandal going right before the election but figured nothing was there. However his big mouth probably led to the FBI telling the Dir of National Security and it was over.
