Don't underestimate public opinion & fear. It only took a few bottles of tylenol laced with cyanide to get that entire lot pulled and for the entire industry to adopt tamper proof lids. (How many self-inflicted knife injuries have resulted from the change?)

Only a few people died of meningitis for now (I know, even one is far too many), so it's not a major hazard, yet the initial reaction will be negative. The company's response should be fast and use an abundance of caution.

It's strange that only a few from a large lot were contaminated and spread meningitis.

How would meningitis fungus get in the vials? Did it waft by on a breeze when a random set of bottles were being capped? Vials went to 26 states yet there is a slight concentration in a few states. The way/rate that they distribute should indicate the length of the contamination window.

Can you see the fungal contamination by eye, e.g., is it a large fuzzy ball?

Did someone introduce it on purpose, or were they negligent about cleaning? Was it on someone's clothes by unlucky chance?

They have traps on the air filters that are monitored on a regular basis for contamination.
