Re: Scientific malfeasance

Thanks for posting the Yahoo article about scientific malfeasance. The NYT has a version of this story at: http://www.nytimes.com/2012/10/02/science/study-finds-fraud-is-widespread-in-retracted-scientific-papers.html .

The new study of tainted science that is the basis for the above articles is rather different from the study I posted about five years ago in #msg-22859747. In the 2007 study, the focus was on improper methodology and poor understanding of statistics, including the failure of many investigators to distinguish between correlation and causation.

The new study, on the other hand, attributes most tainted science to simple fraud.

For biotech investors, both problems—improper methodology and outright fraud—are serious matters. Moreover, there is considerable overlap insofar as some biotech companies are guilty of both offenses.

As stated in the iBox, part of the raison d’être of this message board is to expose biotech scams. On this score, I think the board’s track record is quite good; the recent deconstruction of PPHM is a case in point. Regards, Dew
