New Orleans Mayor Lays Off 3,000 City Workers

NEW ORLEANS (AP) -- The mayor of New Orleans says the city has to lay off as many as 3,000 workers.

Mayor Ray Nagin said he's worked for weeks to try to find the financing that would allow him to keep the city workers on the payroll. However, he said in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, that isn't possible.

He said it's with "great sadness" that he announced that the city can't hold onto its dedicated workers. He thanked those who've served New Orleans.
