zz....of course, government is needed....

but, government exists in layers/levels....

and, our current problem is that government has transformed itself into the pathway to personal enrichment....and, in a capitalist based economy and individual liberty based society that fact spells trouble....

under capitalism when you see all the economically non-productive service jobs being more lucrative than private sector real goods and services jobs, you can be sure something is wrong....

there has been a shift in American economics due ENTIRELY to political corruption.....

you go astray when you say this:

We need restructuring, right now, in a limited number of sectors of our society. I submit a few of those to be Health Care, Defense, Energy, Education, the Drug War, Finance etc.

We tried privatizing all of that and and that has just about destroyed our economy.

we didn't try "privatizing".....the post WWII experience has been the exact opposite....i.e. to wrest these functions from the private sector....

and, government is inept.....government...especially federal government (with a couple of exceptions) is the "make work agency" which hires those who otherwise couldn't or don't want to climb the ladder of success in the private sector....that has built a culture/mentality of government dependence...

and, this is NOT going to happen:

If we don't get the two parties together in the common goal of repairing our massive mess,

we have a group....DEMOCRATS/PROGRESSIVES....who are trying everything possible to create a mess....

that mess, as you call it, heralds their chance to gain power.....that's what it's all about: power and money....

the solution to this nation's problems is to PUSH OUT the progressives and get things like health care and education as far away from politicians and unions as possible....

the need for federal government is very limited:

1) international relations including trade agreements

2) communications (notice the politicians took that one away to keep their coffers filled)

3) uniform laws for vehicular traffic to insure smooth private and commercial travel

4) military

5) and, perhaps....just maybe....disaster relief

other than that, the states can do everything else even
infrastructure......because small units respond faster, better and more cost efficiently than behemoth bureaucracies in which no one wants to take responsibility for outcomes...unless the experience is unanimously positive.
