It is much weaker, no longer able to offer the protections or provide the services the middle class took for granted thirty years ago—the same kinds of services that many European democracies have continued to provide for their citizens during the period of US economic and social decline. And in its weakened state the US government has lost the support of the very citizens who depended on it the most, the middle class.

and, with that, IMO, he falls apart....

my take is: after Reagan two things happened concurrently....progressivism began to noticeably rear its ugly head....and, its pal the NWO became more noticeable ......both aided by the onset of computerization and the emergence of the social media phenomena....

politicians no longer looked out for the people at all....American politics degenerated into a path to personal enrichment....and, both parties are guilty...

consequently, the collusion between government and corporate america spiked to levels beyond anything which ever existed before....

your author is completely incorrect....GOVERNMENT IS STRONGER THAN EVER....

and, now, Americans are taking it on the chin for allowing those people to be elected and remain in office....
