I agree with your interpretation without reservation - that is clearly the thought behind it. I used it though, because I do not think that Jesus would have made the parable comparison between the two (trading and use of God's gifts to us) if He thought that trading was an evil or wrong occupation. The "talents" of the parable were a measure of weight used for gold and silver.

For what it is worth, I do think that if you read it carefully you will find that the man who "went on a long journey" indeed represents the Lord, who ascended into Heaven but later returns for judgement.
