that orange-haired freak in colorado used an AR-15 with a drum clip, which ultimately jammed, but it enabled him to set the American record for people shot in a single session.

I think gun control stuff generally breaks along the line between urban and rural. Many rural folk treat guns as tools, which they are. But many urban people see a gun and they think first about its ability to commit a crime such as murder. Which is natural, that is how guns generally enter into their conversation.

Most all of my guns are inherited, a certain gun for each specific task. rifle for big game, saddle gun, scattergun, black powder rifle, etc.

I am not a handgun fan. They are basically designed to kill people, and they do a good job of it. Which is fine if someone is trying to kill you, but they are so easily concealed that someone could get really close to you before you knew their intent was bad. For "home defense" the 12-gauge is perfectly capable of bisecting an intruder.

I think there should be "no shooting iron" areas in cities, just like the old west cowtowns. Outside of those areas, i don't see anything wrong with responsible people feeling more comfortable with a Glock 40 tucked safely away from the kids. The only handgun i have is a Navy Colt black powder wheel gun, but it has been in the cabinet gathering dust for decades.

I don't even see a big deal with assault rifles, with one major caveat: there is no civilian need for drum magazines.. no one would pack around 100 rounds of ammo in a heavy gun for very far while hunting. And if you needed 100 rounds to kill your quarry, you probably would be better served going to an optometrist. With standard clips, the need to reload sooner means a crazed shooter can be overcome sooner. 100 rounds as fast as one can pull the trigger is very formidable. Had anyone been packing a pistol in the colorado theater, it would have got them killed, as the mismatch between a handgun and a guy in body armor spraying .223 bullets at you would be a losing proposition. But if he had to stop and reload, the handgun would have value for stopping the crazy person.

I personally don't think there is the political will to change any gun laws now. If there were, i would put outlawing 100 round clips for assault rifles on the short list, and hope that some Dodge City ordinances would be passed to create gun free zones in inner cities... carry a gun, get it confiscated until you leave. There may already be places like that, i don't follow gun issues so i am not up on the status of guns in the city.
