net asset value (NAV) per share for a fund The market value of one share of a closed-end, exchange-traded, or preferred fund. The NAV is calculated daily by taking the fund's total assets (securities, cash, and accrued earnings), subtracting the fund's liabilities, and dividing by the number of shares outstanding. The NAV does not include the sales charge. The official NAV is calculated once a day by most U.S. funds at 4:00pm Eastern Time. Partly in response to the growth of open-end exchange-traded funds, some conventional funds have begun calculating an NAV several times a day or, in a few cases, hourly. The more frequent values calculated for exchange-traded funds are not "official" NAVs.
