at the same time, in the 1800's I recall from American history class, that if people did not like "it" in a particular town, they simply up and started a new town made up of beleivers of whatever they wished. the concept of religious or social freedom was never meant in the 1800's that people had to demand some kind of equlaity in a particular place, but could obtain whatever they wanted by making there own separate group somewhere else.
In the 1800's there were numerous towns started as purely religious or social utopian orders. the shaker towns of new england come to mind and there were other utopian town stared in the central staes like tennessee? Some were christian, many were not. So America as practiced does not support the idea of a completley christian mindset. My memory is not good and I can not come up with the other examples
