I knew that was where you were headed when I read your question - that is why I included the reference about the exclusion of Ismael (the father of the arab nations) from the Abrahamic Covenant.

Regardless of the derivation of the word, that is indeed what it means today. Many words have evolved over the years and some new ones are coined without knowledge or understanding. One of my pet peeves is the use of the words "homophobe" and "homophobia", two recently coined words that by their greek derivation mean "fear of man" which has nothing to do with its current use in politically correct speak.
