One more thing.. The ‘chintzy gift” issue– the most misunderstood issue on the postings.
1. Gift giving is VERY SERIOUS in dealing with Chinese. There is a litany of gifts that you can give that the chinese will regard as insulting or very insulting and will break the meeting up over! For example, many cos in the US hand out Swiss Army knives as gifts. To an Asian, a gift of a knife, of any form, it means you are severing the relationship and they are suppose to use the knife on themselves! Even Pres Bush (Sr.) gave a gift to the Chinese of cowboy boots. One boot had the Amer flag engraved….the other the Chinese flag. That turned out to be soo insulting a gift that they nearly severed relationships with the US becasuing anything dealing with the feet deals with the lowest most unclean part of the body.

In the 8K, a certain individual, when I asked about the gifts, responded in a loud voice, 6 inches from my face, “Just a bunch of Chinzy gifts”…with the Chinese right there. Now, he yelled it out loud with the Chinese delegation, who speak English, in front of him.. The criticism was in saying it, not in whether the gifts themselves were chinzy..

Last thing, ….”some Chinese expression in Chinese”….ladies and gentleman, I’ve very glad you came here.
