"bush has inherited more issues than any president in recent memory - 9/11, worldwide terrorism, a bubble economy, high unemployment, and a space shuttle disaster, etc, etc"

It's the terrorism & the tragedies that provide a convenient smokescreen for Mr. Bush to dodge the more tenable issues such as the economy, unemployment, etc, etc. He says a few consoling words, or gets a mean (practically cross-eyed) look and gestures menacingly towards the unseeable assailants: "Gonna gitcha, maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow, but we're gonna gitcha by golly." Where's the policy; what's the man actually doing? Dividend tax exemption? Gimme a break.
As far as handling Saddam, what do you think, threatening a madman will cause him to back down, to concede? No, it will only strengthen his resolve to be defiant . If that is the point, so be it.
In the end, Mr. Bush might be said to be a basically decent, regular guy reared under extraordinary circumstances, and thrust into a position for which he is vastly unprepared and overmatched. His presidency will be remembered more for the historic events surrounding it, rather than the man and his actions. Hopefully, he will do less harm than good, and his legacy will be left to slowly fade into the fabric of history, but that remains to be seen.
