Work by the French economists Emmanuel Saez and Thomas Piketty shows income inequality growing in the United States, with the top 1 percent of earners taking home more and more of the nation’s income. The wealthiest received nearly a quarter of U.S. income before the Great Depression, but their share fell after World War II.
