I never, ever under any circumstances use a stop loss. I'm not recommending you don't use one. I don't use them because I have what in my opinion is a better strategy for handling unexpected drops in price. Usually, in the stocks I trade, those kinds of unanticipated price drops are only temporary in nature so, I cost average down after a careful reanalysis to ensure I still like the long side of the stock. Even if I decide to get out because I believe it will go lower. I can usually buy more shares back at a lower price and catch a bounce big enough to get me to breakeven. As a result, I very rarely lose money on a trade.
