They all derive profits from not rocking the boat.
In the case of NBC, it's actually owned by GE, one of the world's largest weapons manufacturers. And that's just the most obvious example of the intertwined interests that have subsumed the "free press". All of our major papers and news outlets are owned by enormous corporate interests. All subsist on advertising. F*ck with APAC, for instance, and see where that gets your bottom line.
Many think they know that Ahmadinejad threatened to destroy Israel. Few know that he's on his way out, but fewer still realize that he merely said the regime in Jerusalem would disappear from the pages of history. (as did the one in Pretoria, though few would suggest South Africa itself was destroyed by. I happen to believe that Israel will eventually be a democracy, though hardly by choice. see my next post) And even fewer still understand that Ahmadinejad has no such power, nor has he ever.
Why does no one get this... Because it would be inconvenient for the unwashed to understand they're being led down this particular garden path.
It would be inconvenient for the brutal, expansionist, racist regime in Israel, bent on it's decades-long ethnic cleansing of ancient Judea and Samara, and struggling to maintain miltary dominance of the Middle East.
It would be inconvenient for the Christian right in America, bent on destroying the world in preparation for the return of Jesus.
It would be inconvenient for the extraction industries which desperately need to maintain control over a dwindling oil supply in the face of an ever growing world demand for just that supply.
It would be inconvenient for those generals and admirals, who wielding only hammers, see all the world's problems as nails, and need the population to just shut up and do as it's told.
It would truly inconvenient for the enormous weapons industry that depends on war for its sustenance.
...and it would surely be inconvenient for a press that depends on, or is owned outright by, these aforementioned interests to speak a word that contradicts the line.
It just is what it is.
