Well uncontrolled free radicals are clearly a bad thing, but controlled free radicals are part of the redox signaling system. For example, NO is a free radical, but is important for the continuation of the species (amongst other critical functions).

A good example of the complexity of the issue is something like exercise - it can dramatically increases production of free radicals, but nobody argues that exercise is bad for you.
