Indeed. The way I found out how to do this was by accident. I had enough equity in the account for margin. Since I'm a Canadian, there was no problem doing this on an OTC-BB stock. I originally wanted to use margin to buy more stock for a quick flip, but instead of the stock going up, it went down 15% and I lost a few dollars. My broker suggested I short the stock to regain my loss, and showed me how to do it. The stock continued its slide as most OTC stocks do, and I ended up several thousand dollars ahead on the short.
When one doesn't attach their emotions to a stock, there are ways to make more money than by sitting there like a mushroom hoping for their beloved stock to rise.
Just 2 sides of the same coin..
"Shorting against the box". A very common way to play a volatile stock. Quite a bit safer than regular shorting.
