I am not sure who Gould is, but the universally accepted evolutionary map is that of starting with a soup of proteins and organic chemicals which somehow manages to give itself "life", to amoeba to man, with branches here and there. It is a model that is most certainly seen as moving steadily from less to more complex and "higher" life forms and one that takes all kinds of blind faith to believe in. Such a theory stands the 2nd law of thermodynamics on its head.
