Probably for the same reason you didn't cut your pecker off when you were 12. By the time you were 18, you might want to use it.

And, like Steve Martin in The JERK (..how appropriate..), once you discovered what you Special Purpose was for - you probably determined that you wanted to use it a whole lot more often........
