It's not a "big problem" because we uphold people's right to personal beliefs, and we try to uphold a standard of human and civil rights. It "works" because of our Constitutional Rights, and because these Rights have become part of the American psyche. Who was it who said...a "patriot"..

.."I many not agree with what you say but I'll stake my life on your right to say it"..
