President Obama's attack dogs have a new target — Newt Gingrich.

The Democratic National Committee on Sunday released a campaign ad that tags Gingrich as the “original Tea Partier.”

The ad hit the Internet less than four hours after Gingrich showed he could take the heat as the latest Republican front-runner during Saturday’s GOP primary debate in Iowa.

Gingrich’s foes warned his temper would erupt under a combined grilling from his opponents and the media.

But he didn’t self-destruct, and so became the latest target of the Obama re-election campaign, which until now had reserved its ammo for Mitt Romney.

“I want to invite you to a party
— a Tea Party,” a smiling Gingrich says in the DNC video.

The ad tags Gingrich’s positions — from calling in 1984 to privatize Social Security, to seeking to end Medicare in 1995 to protecting tax loopholes in 2011.

“Newt Gingrich was a Tea Party politician
, even before there was a Tea Party,” DNC Chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz said in a post-debate statement.

Gingrich polling so far shows he’s been able to fend off attacks on his record, including sniping from fellow Republicans, who argue Gingrich has shown himself to be temperamentally unsuited to be in the White House.

Romney sought to highlight Gingrich’s recklessness Saturday by going after Gingrich’s recent comments calling th Palestinians an “invented” people.

“You don’t speak for Israel,” Romney told Gingrich.

“I didn’t speak for the people of Israel,” Gingrich said, defusing the issue. “I spoke as a historian who’s looked at the world stage for a very long time. . . . An amazing number of Israelis found it nice to have an American tell the truth.”

Romney’s supporters had to clean up after their man when he offered during the debate to bet opponent Rick Perry $10,000.

Romney brought up the wager as he and Perry sparred over Romney’s health insurance policy when he was Massachusetts governor, and how it was portrayed in Romney’s book. Romney said Perry was wrong about the content of the book, and should be willing to put his money where his mouth was.

“I was taken a little aback,” Rick Perry told “Fox News Sunday.”

“Driving out to the station this morning, I’m pretty sure I didn’t drive by a house that anyone in Iowa would think a $10,000 bet was possible. It was a little out of touch with the normal Iowa citizen.”

“He used a figure of speech," former New Hampshire Gov. John Sununu, a Romney backer, told CNN
on Sunday.

“I think the only thing that will come out of that is to remind people about a $500,000 outstanding bill at Tiffany’s,” Sununu added — a jab at Gingrich’s extensive line of credit at the high-end jewelry store.
