Personally, I'm surprised more Americans are not questioning the Iraq initiative. The media seems to report majority support for a pre-emptive strike. Few people seem inclined to debate the issue in terms of ethics or necessity. The Bush "logic" goes something like this: We think Saddam has WMD. Military force is needed to effect a regime change. The fact that Bush appears to lack proof of an active weapons program is cloaked in such things as "security concern" or "intelligence info", ie "we're not telling you nuthin!" Then there's the spin that seems to insinuate that "real" Americans support the President [blindly?!]... Or that it is somehow "patriotic" to support the President unconditionally.... Because they really can't tell us what's going on anyway...[you know - "nat'l security," and "intelligence info" - and "stuff" like that...] But where is the nexis between "we think" [kinda, sorta..] and killing people with bombs?....
The US Presidency is not a totalitarian position. And real patriots do question government. The real US Patriots fought against oppressive government. In a real democracy, government answers to it's people. Holding government accountable is a responsiblity and necessity of freedom.
What's wrong with this picture??.. Civilised nations use war as a last resort, after all else has been exhausted, or when the threat is clear, well defined, and eminent. The US government does not have the right to kill based on "maybes," and certainly not until all diplomacy has proven futile. It is the responsibility of a free people to keep government in check..... And there doesn't seem to be much "checking" going on..... Recently, I read an article asking if the US had lost the moral authority to lead. I'm wondering if the American people have lost their ability to think?...
