NeoMedia reports dramatic increase in mobile bar code scans
December 1, 2011 | By Michael Johnsen

ATLANTA — NeoMedia Technologies on Thursday reported a dramatic 240% rise in mobile bar code scans via its scanning software application NeoReader for Black Friday 2011 compared to last year, including 13% growth in 2-D scans over 1-D.

"Retail is going mobile. People are not only using their phones to get more information on goods and services, both in-store and on the go, but also to purchase," stated Laura Marriott, NeoMedia CEO. "This year has been a great year for mobile bar codes, and we are confident usage will continue to increase over the busy Christmas shopping period. This surge in usage demonstrates growing consumer awareness, which will continue to create opportunities for all those in the mobile bar code ecosystem."

The increase not only demonstrates that consumers are using their mobile phones as a shopping tool, but that they are actively engaging with the mobile bar codes that retailers are incorporating in sales and marketing communications.

In 2011, the types of mobile bar codes scanned were 87% 2-D, versus 13% 1-D compared to 2010 when 74% were 2-D versus 26% 1-D, demonstrating a trend toward 2-D mobile bar code prevalence. Android was the leading operating system when it came to number of scans, accounting for 53%, while 27% came from iOS and 8% from Symbian.
