<This society is not the perfect meritocracy that some here apparently believe it to be.>

Agreed, and probably never will be. And so long as we award preferential treatment based on anything but merit, we have little or no chance of getting there.

<Those with superior wealth and standing have not always come to that lofty status as a result of greater intelligence and toil.>

So? Is this my problem, or yours. Why is it to be "our" concern how someone achieves "lofty status" so long as it was not illegally obtained?

< Some are born on third base; some never get up to bat.>

Where, to whom, and with what genes one is born is beyond the control of you and I. This is as it should be. In the lottery of life, some children get the right numbers, others don't. Some build on what they were born with, others slouch their way to an ignoble end.

We have enough challenge in attempting to provide equal opportunity for intellectual growth to those capable of assimilating it.

Do you suggest our system should mongrelize them all in the misguided attempt to provide not just equal opportunity but equal success?
