SoxFan...IMO "So what programs would you get rid of", I would not get rid of any of the ones you listed, I would in stead:

Social Security - Clear up, Clean up, Severely investigate & truly cut waste. Reorganize & Lower cost with an option for a percentage to be released for a 'self managed plan' with a signed release of responsibility.

Medicare - Clean up & Reorganize, Lower cost, Severely investigate & truly cut waste.

Medicaid - Again, Clean up, Reorganize, Severely investigate & truly cut waste.

Unemployment compensation - This is in need of a sever reorganization as well. It's a good idea, but has gotten completely out of control, as has most all government due to the natural failure of man to police them selves. Both at state & federal levels!

Welfare - Keep reducing while cleaning up the waste, redistribute the funds to the proper needs, major reorganization here as well.

IMO we do not need to remove these organizations, they just need a thorough reorganization, and there are plenty of funds if the monies were spent properly. I believe that if these were in the private sector there would be enough money, probably not a surplus, but I bet it would be doable.
