My grandparents used to tell me tales that their parents told them about the early days on the N.D. prairies when they homesteaded there.

They would have good years and bad years, of course. I remember hearing some wild tales but the one that stands out in my mind was the one about Russian thistles serving as a food source for many during the leanest years.
