Often judges ask for a brief to the court from independent experts. Judges know they may not know all the nitty gritty details of the wide range of technical cases they need to rule on.

Thanks for the added color, it's something that's puzzled me since the start of the legal wrangling.

Dew's earlier message made a light to go on in my thick skull: for the court, it's not so much a scientific issue as a legal issue, hence the request for Momenta to present a memorandum of law.
